Easier said than done but BJP debates BSY’s exit

Facing a difficult choice between maintaining the party’s image and realpolitik, the BJP central leadership has begun considering the possibility of sacrificing an electorally significant B S Yeddyurappa in Karnataka. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, who returned from London today, is learnt to have held informal consultations with his colleagues.

The push for a change in the leadership is also coming from a section of the BJP in the state, headed by the party’s Karnataka president K S Eshwarappa, who hails from the same district as Yeddyurappa.

According to BJP sources close to the Chief Minister, however, Yeddyurappa remains confident. He is set to arrive in New Delhi from his Mauritius trip tomorrow.

Eshwarappa has officially stated that he would like to wait for the final report of the Lokayukta, indicting Yeddyurappa for illegal mining in the state, to be placed before the government before commenting on the indictment of the Chief Minister. However, he added on Friday that the charges of phone-tapping made by Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde were a serious one.
