Biometric cards in BC hostels

April 25: The state government has decided to introduce ‘biometric attendance system’ for nearly 8 lakh students and staff in about 8,000 welfare hostels belonging to Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to check irregularities like inflating the student intake to claim more funds from the government.

It has also decided to procure pulses, palmolien oil and other essential commodities directly from the civil supplies corporation and other commodities like turmeric, bengal gram, tamarind, broomsticks and cosmetics from the Girijan Cooperative Corporation to be used in hostels. The decisions were taken by the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, at a review meeting with the ministers and officials of various welfare departments on Monday at the Secretariat. At present, the civil supplies department is supplying only rice to welfare hostels and the rest of the items are being procured from private players by inviting tenders at the district-level.

“The attendance of students and staff will be constantly monitored through biometric system. Apart from this all transactions in hostels will be computerised such as transport of goods, arrival of commodities, entry in stock registers and will be linked to central server in Hyderabad for online monitoring,” said Mr Pitani Satyanarayana, the minister for social welfare. The government expects to save about `100 crore arising out of ‘cost difference’ due to new procurement policy.
