DSP gets 1-yr jail for bribe

The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Vijayawada on Friday sentenced a DSP and a retired constable to one year imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 2,000 in connection with the suicide of a person on the police station premises in 1994 at Bapatla in Guntur district.

According to prosecution, the DSP G. Srinivas Rao, of Hyderabad, and the retired constable Syed Adam were sentenced for one year imprisonment for demanding Rs 10,000 bribe from two accused of rape case.

Two persons Nannam Guruvaiah and his son Nannam Srinivas were taken into custody on December 17, 1994 in a rape case. The former town sub-inspector (now DSP in Hyderabad), G. Srinivasa Rao and former constable Syed Adam demanded Rs 10,000 bribe to release them.

Guruvaiah’s wife Chinnamma faced many hardships to pay Rs 10,000 bribe but in vain. Hurt with the incident, Guruvaiah committed suicide by hanging in the police station.

The local police booked a case and later it was taken over by the CB-CID.
