April 25: The Crime Investigation Department’s cyber crime police on Monday arrested 12 accused, including nine Nigerians and three Indian women, on the charge of cheating a government employee in the name of an online award. The accused had collected around Rs 3.2 lakh as processing fee to release lakhs of dollars of award.

The arrested have been identified as Paulinus Oti Victor Scott, 31, Nwaneti Chigozie 22, Obumnaenne Emmanuel Ezenwaka, 31, Solomon E. Achulo, 27, Ojimba Henry, 31, Paulinus Emeka Adibe, 36, Ezennayi Emmanuel, 33, Ekechukwou Onyebuchi Patrick, 28, Umeokoli Nnaemeka, 26, all natives of Nigeria, and Malsawmthangi, 33, Chatwanremlali, 20, and Laldingliani, 26, from Aizwal. The complainant, Mr B. Rajendra Prasad, had alleged that his daughter had received an email stating that her email ID had won the anniversary award of Microsoft in London worth $10 lakh. Mr Prasad had paid Rs 3.2 lakh as processing charges and customs tax to claim the prize amount. Later he was told to pay additional money to clean the notes with a chemical. This got Mr Prasad suspicious and he lodged a complaint.

In another similar case, the Cyberabad cops nabbed six persons, including five Nigerians, for cheating Mr G. Amit Kumar, a 21-year-old Hyderabadi. to the tune of `24 lakh. The accused were identified as Oazee Ewemade Collins, 32, Edoja Kennedy, 34, Inneah Ambrose Amadin, 32, Charles Omage, 32, Emmanual Uyi, 31 and Mumbai’s Pooja Karmokar.
