2 CISF personnel killed as truck overturns

KANCHEEPURAM: Two Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were killed and 14 others sustained injuries in a road accident on Chennai-Tirupati Road near Tiruttani on Wednesday morning.

According to police, the accident took place around 6.30 a.m. near the Ponpadi railway station, around 5 km from Tiruttani.

A team of 16 CISF personnel, led by team leader S.R.Maan were travelling in the truck, driven by V.D.Yadhav, a CISF constable. Discarded and scrap materials were being transported from the Regional Training Centre (RTC), Thakkolam near Arakonam to another CISF RTC at Bhilai in Chhattisgarh. The vehicle left the Thakolam RTC around 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to CISF sources.

According to police, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue while negotiating a sharp turn near Ponpadi village and as a result the truck overturned after hitting boulders and iron materials kept along a railway track.

In the impact, two CISF personnel – head constable S.P.Singh and constable A.H.Chand – sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot.

Other team members – Maan, Yadhav, sub-inspector Vijayaraja, head constables Khaberpaul and Govalanath, constables Akbar Hussain, Mukil, Khurshid, Gughendra Kumar, Chandobha, Sooriyavan, Subash Chandra, R.K.Varma and Kamliwad – sustained injuries and were rushed to Government Taluk Hospital, Tiruttani. Later, they were referred to a private hospital on the western outskirts of Chennai, police said.
