Age is tie-breaker on MBBS list

CHENNAI: With a total of 66 students scoring 200/200 applying for MBBS seats, the decision of ranking them was based almost entirely on the date of birth of the students, V.S.Vijay, Health Minister, said on Tuesday. Older students get preference in ranking, the Minister explained.

Releasing the rank list for the MBBS counselling for 2011-2012, Dr. Vijay said of the 66 students, 34 had scored 200/200 in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, while 32 students scored 200/200 in the relevant subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

He added all students would be called for counselling as per their position in the rank list. Counselling would begin on June 30, and the first day would be reserved for all those in the ‘special category' – children of freedom fighters, differently abled persons, sports quota candidates and children of army personnel.

He said the list would be uploaded on to the Selection committee's website www.tnhealth.org

The list of toppers includes three Chennai-based students, and three students from A.K.T.Academy, Kallakurichi. K. Sivaranjani of Sri Vidya Mandir Matriculation School, Rasipuram, is ranked first, followed by L.S.Dhakshini of Green Park Matriculation School, and Sruthi Ganesh of DAV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai. M. Suresh Paul Raj of Holy Family Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai, stands fourth; followed by A. Harinivas, of AKT Academy, M.J.Dhunasheeba Soundarya of SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai, and P. Akila, of Adarsh Vidyalaya, Andhiyur. At eighth, ninth and 10 {+t} {+h} places are R. Manikandan of AKT Academy, S. Sivasakthivel of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram; and J. Arunkumar of AKT Academy.

A total of 1,653 seats are available in 17 government colleges. Included in this list of 17 colleges is Tiruvarur Government Medical College (100 seats). However, the MCI has not yet granted recognition for the college. “We are confident of getting the approval for this year. The government is taking all efforts in this regard,” according to Dr. Vijay.

The expected increase in the number of seats at Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, and Kilpauk Medical College, will not come through this year, because of certain requirements specified by the MCI, he clarified. The State has set next year as the target for these extra seats.

The position with regard to seats surrendered by private medical colleges to the State quota, in order that they can be offered under the single window counselling, is still unclear, the Minister said, adding that this would be sorted out before the second phase of counselling begins. Answering questions from the media, Dr. Vijay said the committee to fix the fees to be charged by self-financing medical colleges would meet next week.
