Retro gaming is back

If the last decade was the era of remakes, then this is the era of releases.

Whether through PSN or Virtual Console, old games are being re-released through the Internet with little or no change from their originals.

Before this generation we saw frequent remakes of classic games, like Final Fantasy IV or Link to the Past. These games were heavily modernised with improved graphics, newer arrangements of sound and extended gameplay.

Overall these were received well and some outsold the original releases. The only downside was the library of retro titles was extremely limited, each title requiring an investment of time and money.

Now, with the advent of digital distribution, companies have started using the medium to resell older games by the pound. With little effort from their side, old games could be shipped, as is, to modern devices via the Internet.

This meant no marketing, no development and no distribution costs. Thus, each sale was a profit and a much larger library is available. Though they aren’t as well done as remakes, these games also retain a truer retro feel.

A greater library or deeper remakes, in the end the choice is one of preference.
