Downpour cools Chennai by 5ºC

The sudden torrential downpour in the city Monday night led to a drop in the minimum temperature by 5º Celsius to 23ºC even though the maximum temperature was higher by a degree at 39º C.

The weathermen have predicted that light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu and coastal Puducherry.

The regional meteorological department here said cloudy skies and drizzles are likely to bring some respite to people in the state who have been scorched by the blistering heat during the past month.

The weather office forecast partly cloudy skies in Chennai and its suburbs. Rain or thundershowers may occur in some areas during evening or night. Maximum temperature will be around 36ºC.

The weather bulletin also read that good rainfall was recorded in Cholavaram, Tiruvannamalai, Chembarambakkam, Tiruvallur, Orathanadu, Pattukottai, Mettur dam, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Krishnagiri, Arani and Polur.

Following the sudden spell of rain, Alandur municipality set up a panel to work in case of a deluge. “Four avenue trees uprooted last night were removed and a round-the-clock squad is formed to remove trees and worn out electric posts,” Alandur municipal chairman A. Duraivelu said.

However, there were no traffic disruptions at Chennai International airport on Tuesday. On late Monday night, a few domestic flights arriving in Chennai were diverted to Bengaluru.
