HYDERABAD: The decomposed body of 11-year-old, Ch. Pranav, who was kidnapped three days ago from outside his house in Asifnagar while waiting to receive a friend, was found in a gunny bag in a nala at Gudimalkapur on Monday.
Police believe Pranav, son of Deputy Project Director of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), Ch. Rammohan Rao, was smothered to death the day he was kidnapped, and suspect a city-based gang to be behind it. Motive behind the boy's abduction and murder, however, is not yet known, Additional Commissioner of Police A.R. Anuradha said.
Investigators are probing the case from the angles of kidnap for ransom, personal animosity, and family dispute. The fifth standard student and computer-savvy Pranav was last seen on Friday noon standing outside his house at Alapatinagar. “I am expecting a friend,” the casually dressed boy told a neighbour when asked what he was doing under the hot sun.
Pranav's father received a call on his mobile phone from the kidnappers speaking in Hindi. “Are you Pranav's father? We kidnapped your son,” the person said. As his mobile phone's battery was low, Mr. Rao couldn't either listen clearly to what the caller said or continue the conversation. The kidnapper said he would call in the night.
Mr. Rao called back the number after rushing home only to trace it to a public call office in Alapatinagar. He approached the police who launched a hunt. The abductors rang up once again in the night. This call too was made from another public telephone booth in Isamiabazar.
Before stepping out of the house carrying a pen-drive, Pranav answered a call on the residential landline phone. “He was giving directions to a friend to reach his house,” said West Zone DCP Stephen Ravindra. The boy used to play computer games using the pen-drive, but it had no secret information as believed by some, the police said.
Forensic doctors said the decomposed state of the stuffed body in the gunny bag suggested he was killed some time between Friday noon and midnight. Calls made by the abductors from the local telephone booths and the body being found in same area prompted the police to believe the kidnappers detained the boy somewhere in the surrounding localities.
Hyderabad police have formed special teams to trace the killers.
