Police to have Neighbourhood Liaison Officers

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore City Police will shortly have Special Sub-Inspectors (SSIs) who will act as Neighbourhood Liaison Officers in particular pockets in each police station limit.

City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari told The Hindu that there were nearly 10 SSIs in each police station and they would be assigned to particular pockets and designated as Neighbourhood Liaison Officers. These officers would give their mobile phone numbers to the residents in the area and would have the phone numbers of people residing in the area. The exercise would bridge the gap between the police and the public and bring them closer for a better and frequent interaction, Mr. Pujari said.

“Exclusively designating such officers for each neighbourhood is a must because the Inspector of that station may not be able to regularly and frequently meet all residents. Hence, the decision to have a direct interface with the public through Neighbourhood Liaison Officers,” he said. These officers will visit the areas frequently, interact with the residents' welfare association representatives, residents of apartments, traders and vigilance committee members and establish a rapport with them to ensure constant flow of information. These officers will listen to the grievances of the residents in the neighbourhood and through the Police Commissioner's office pass them on to the authorities concerned for redressal. This will avert a situation of people taking their problems to the streets. . These officers will have a sense of responsibility, belonging to the area and will ensure security in the areas under them. The police are on the job of carving out geographical areas in each police station limit.
